In today’s grammar, let’s look at the difference between “Consist” and “Comprise”.

Let’s get started!

1. Consist

Consist is used to describe what something is ‘made of’. We don’t use them in continuous forms. We only use the active form of consist of :

i.e. Their diet only consisted of fruit and seeds.

i.e. The whole group consists of students.

2. Comprise

Comprise is used to describe what something is ‘made of’,but is more formal than consist. We can also use it in the passive voice in the form ‘be comprised of’:

i.e. The course is comprised of ten lectures and five seminars on the theory of economics and banking.

i.e. Oil and coal comprise 70% of the nation’s exports.
